It has been rumored by the older folks strip of the Morgan Fork Rail Road is haunted by the ghost of a young lady. The legend has it that if you walk the tracks from Clearfield toward Sim Owens road (near Clack Mountain), a young lady will follow you at a distance and then vanish. Sim Owens was located accross the creek from the Homer Gregory Sawmill (about 1/8 mile from Clack mtn). ----------------------------------------------------------- Source: Several local residents all interviewed at different times. ___________________________________________________________ UPDATE: 2004 All but the tracks in the old Rail Yard in Clearfield Kentucky have been removed. This due to a new highway project for KY 519. The site of the old RR will undoubtedly soon be unidentifiable. If your looking to see this area; The best entrance would be from Laws Mobile Home Park (With Permission of course). Walk towards the wooded hillside until your on the old rail road bed. Turn left and walk the old rail bed past Homer Gregory Sawmill. The road crossing the creek into the sawmill(left) and into the hollow (on the right) is Sim Owens Branch. An alternative would be to park at the pull off (near the old quarry) at the bottom of Clack Mountain and locate the old rail bed. Then follow the old rail road bed north passing the sawmill until you reach Laws. Turn around and walk back to your car. Again, This should be done with permission. The Sawmill has a Guard. ___________________________________________________________ UPDATE: 2008 With highway construction rerouting KY 519, the best access to this location may soon be straight up the highway, just past the 3rd bridge from Morehead to the right site of the road. The location should be unaffected by the highway's new route.
