Hi! I'm a student at Morehead State University. and have done some research on the campus' ghosts....
Although the ghost in Baird is accurate, I fear that the ghost, named Penelope, who runs Nunn Hall is inaccurate. Her name was Caroline and although she was involved in several activities at MSU, she was a very sad and upset student who just couldn't fit in here at Morehead and so she took her own life by jumping off of Nunn Hall....she landed on the lobby and did not die instantly, but died en route to Lexington for treatment. There was also two other students of Nunn who killed themselves. One's name is Ginger and during the seventies she put a gun in her mouth while she was 'high' on pot and pulled the trigger... The final ghost, her name remains unkown, but her story is accuate- She was the student who became impregnated and her family disapproved. So she went to Eagle Lake and drowned herself. On some chilly foggy nights, you can her a scream and cries for help. Caroline and Ginger haunt Nunn, pulling silly little pranks on the residents- Together they are known as Penelope. When I lived in Nunn last semester, she woke me up in the middle of the night when my roommate's and I's comuter was off, but somehow the speakers were on and she started talking in Spanish through the speakers. She also likes to wake girls who are running late to classes up by shaking their beds. This has happened to myself and a few of my sorority sisters. The TVs, lights, and the shower are some of her favorite things to play with. Other places on campus that happen to be haunted are: Cartmell Hall- When the dorm was near completed in the seventies, someone decieded to take a ride on a cable from the 16th to the ninth floor and was killed. The ghosts haunts the ninth floor annoying residents and moving things. TV's are also a favorite. Also in the 80's there was a band student who sold hot dogs out of his van...one day the propane tank exploded and he was burned alive...but you can still smell hotdogs from time to time outside of Cartmell Hall.
Butler Hall- Three years ago, a female student hung herself over spring break on the second floor. She loves to scare students to this day and suposedly tries to get back at the people who were mean to her and made her hate her life....
The old Nadatorium (Swimming pool)- A Sig Eg (frat) pledge was being hazed and part of his hazing was to break into the pool and jump in to go swimming....no one knew it had been emptied... After that incident, for several years the pool was closed for odd occurances that occured such as screams and such. You can also see a figure from time to time walking around the pool and in the drained pool. In the sixties the pool was reopened and students from the local elementary school appeared to go swimming- their adult was not watching and two of the young children drowned at the same time. It is said that you can hear child-like voices playing games in the old pool- however, its doors are closed for forever now....
Button Auditorium- I have heard two ghost stories about Button- One was when the Theater dept. was housed there, the theater junkies would initiate the new thesbians....so they'd make them put on a play....however, to scare them, they would hang an 'initiate' from the lights placing one rope around their stomach to hold their weight, and a fake rope around their neck. Someone mixed the ropes up and she wasn't acting anylonger. Some say you can hear a choking noise although I've never heard or seen any evidence of it. The other story is about a janitor from the 1980's who was cleaning the bell tower, and fell, breaking her neck and dying instantly. To this day she continues her job, cleaning Button. I have seen a picture of her and it's rather scary- Several of us went to go and see a friend in a play and went up to the front by the stage to take a picture during the bows. Well, when the picture was developed, there was a woman in an old MSU janitorial smock, broom in hand, cleaning the orchestra pit. She was looking right at the camera but the weird thing was you could see right through her. It was crazy.
There is also one more story of Baird. When the addition to Baird Music Hall was being completed, the area now known as 'drum world' to students served as a home to a homeless man. When the concrete was being poured, he became part of the cement. It is said that he now haunts drum world late at night walking around and trying to find a new home.
These are just a few stories that I have found or heard from faculty who have been here since the 60's. I hope you enjoy them-
Fondly, KEK
